Priorat DOCq, Spain
Coma Vella is Mas d'en Gil's single-vineyard flagship red — named after the steep, ancient vine terraces (coma vella means "old slope" in Catalan) that climb the rocky hillsides of Bellmunt del Priorat. From vines that are in some cases more than a century old, planted in the region's iconic llicorella (crumbling black slate), it is a wine of extraordinary concentration and purity.
The Mas d'en Gil estate, owned by the Rovira family since 1998, is one of Priorat's most respected organic producers. Old bush vines of Grenache and Carignan are dry-farmed on impossibly steep terraces, with yields so low that what arrives in the cellar is deeply extracted and naturally intense. Winemaker Joan Rovira works with indigenous yeasts, small vats, and careful French oak ageing to let the terroir speak — nothing added, nothing taken away.
Deep, almost opaque garnet in the glass. The nose is complex and wild — dark plum, blackberry, crushed slate, dried rosemary, and a savoury mineral depth that is unmistakably Priorat. The palate is powerful and full-bodied, yet the tannins are finely woven, and the acidity keeps everything alive and driving through a very long finish. A wine for long cellaring or, with patient decanting, magnificent tonight with slow-roasted lamb, wild boar, or aged Manchego.

Mas d'en Gil
Marta Rovira Carbonell abandoned a career as an aeronautical engineer in Munich to return home to Catalonia and take over the family wine business that began in 1918. Marta quickly introduced organic methods at Finca Mas D’en Gil, and has moved towards biodynamic practices in the vineyard and winery. Finca Mas D’en Gil’s natural approach to winemaking was influenced by Marta’s grandmother Pilar, an expert in lunar cycles and local medicinal plants. In her family’s high-altitude vineyards Marta produces a vibrant style of wine that stands in contrast with the heavy, over-extracted Priorat wines of her father’s time. Marta’s Bellmunt and Coma Vella make better use of the altitude and terroir at Finca Mas D’en Gil, providing fresh and engaging examples of Grenache and Carignan blends.
