Burgundy is renowned for producing some of the finest and most complex wines in the world, and it is the region most closely associated with the idea of terroir. A single slope can be divided into dozens of named plots, the difference between a Premier Cru and a Grand Cru can be a matter of metres, and the same grapes — principally Pinot Noir for red and Chardonnay for white — produce wines of extraordinary diversity depending on the soil and aspect of each vineyard.
