We are very proud to have German winemaker on our list for the very first time. For many years, we have been looking for a German winemaker who fits our ethos of independent and quality-focused artisan winemaking. But we knew the wine we dreamt of were out there, so we never stopped looking. Long hours of research and walking vineyards up and down the Rheingau finally brought us to Andreas Bender, a winemaker we are proud to work with. Andreas is known to other winemakers as “the Maverick of the Mosel”! Andreas comes from a winemaking family in the Mosel town of Leiwen. He acquired his 35 ha of vineyards in Pfalz and the Mosel bit by bit from family friends or bought from neighbours as the next generation opts out of winemaking. He is a traditionalist: choosing prime soils, hand-selecting grapes, using time-honoured methods in the cellar and allowing natural fermentation of his fruit. His contemporary attitude comes through in the Bender label design and his accessible and fun wines. His Pinot Noir and Riesling ably avoid the pitfalls of intimidating new drinkers and boring connoisseurs.
