Orange Wine

Orange wine is white wine made with an ancient technique — grape skins left in contact with the juice during fermentation, as in red winemaking, producing wines of deep amber colour, remarkable tannin structure, complex oxidative character and a textural richness quite unlike any conventional white. Wines Direct sources orange wine from quality-focused independent producers who use this ancient method with genuine knowledge and skill, producing wines of real character and extraordinary food versatility.

Orange wine is white wine made with extended skin contact — grapes pressed and left in contact with their skins for days, weeks or sometimes months, rather than being pressed immediately as in conventional white wine production. The result is a wine of amber or copper colour, firm tannin structure, oxidative complexity and a texture and depth quite unlike conventional white wine. The style is ancient — it originated in Georgia, where wine is still made in traditional qvevri (clay amphorae buried in the earth). Today orange wine is associated primarily with natural and minimal intervention winemakers in Slovenia, Friuli, Georgia, Sicily and beyond. At Wines Direct we have a carefully curated orange wine selection.
