Priorat DOCQ

Priorat is one of Spain's most prestigious and dramatically beautiful wine regions — a remote, mountainous landscape of llicorella slate and quartz soils in Catalonia where ancient Garnacha and Cariñena vines produce wines of extraordinary concentration, mineral depth and longevity that command global respect. Wines Direct imports from quality-focused independent Priorat producers who demonstrate what this remarkable terroir can achieve in the hands of genuine artisans.

Priorat is one of Spain's most dramatic and most prestigious wine appellations — a remote, mountainous zone in Catalonia where vines grow on ancient black slate and quartz soils called llicorella. The extreme terrain, poor soils, intense heat and very low yields produce wines of extraordinary concentration, power and complexity — some of the most intense and long-lived red wines made anywhere in the world. The dominant varieties are Garnacha (Grenache) and Carinena (Carignan), often from very old vines, blended increasingly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Priorat DOCq shares its top classification with Rioja as Spain's only two wines at this level. At Wines Direct we stock Priorat from producers who understand that the best wines here are about terroir and restraint, not just power.
