Babeasca Neagra — 'the old woman's grape' — is one of Romania's most ancient indigenous varieties, and La Sapata in the Vrancea wine region is one of its finest advocates. Grown on the rolling hills of eastern Romania, where a continental climate produces grapes of real character, this garnet-hued wine opens with cherry, wild strawberry, and a floral violet note.
On the palate it's medium-bodied with soft tannins and a lively acidity that makes it wonderfully food-friendly. A genuinely exciting discovery from a winemaking country on the rise. Delicious with grilled lamb, roasted duck, or mushroom ragù.

Di Filippo Wines
The 30 hectares of Di Filippo vineyards in Italy overlook Assisi, resting on sun-drenched hills between Torgiano and Montefalco, inthe heart of Umbria. But in 2010, the Di Filippo family brought theirphilosophy abroad to Romania. Roberto had gone to Romania witha friend, Roberto Pieroni, who had lived there for many years. Todaythey have a joint venture in their label La Sapata, with a vision tofocus on organic farming and invest in local resources and people tocreate business for the local community. Sapata is 20 hectares ofscattered vineyard plots in the Cislita area and vineyards planted byhand with workers from local villages.Roberto and his partners use the same work ethics and model inRomania as they do in Umbria. They practice organic andbiodynamic farming with the help of draught horses in the vineyard.Roberto has been called the oenologist horse whisperer by localjournalists.
