The Lourenço family are considered by many to lead the way in winemaking in the Dão. Their vineyard is now a registered organic estate, and their wine is grown high in the mountains on granite soil. Maias is the local name for the Weaver`s Broom plant, which surrounds the estate here. This wine is more akin to a Beaujolais Cru. So, succulent red fruit, crème de cassis, a splash of cream, savoury dried herbs, and deeply refreshing acidity; we love this slightly chilled with barbeques, light lunches, etc. Mediterranean or Middle Eastern fare.

Luis Louro
Quinta das Maias is a fantastic little wine farm situated 600 metres above sea level on a high plateau in the Dao region of Portugalwho are certified organic. Luis Lourenco who runs the estate is proud of this fact and also of his excellent wines which not only offer great, approachable drinkability but also fantastic value for money. The estate was originally planted to vines in the late 19th century, and since changes in law which allow producers more freedom to bottle their own wines, quality has improved drastically, and forward thinking producers like Luis have come to realise the potential of the fantastic granitic terroir and the delicious local grapes varieties, Jaen, Encruzado and Malvasia Fina.
