Dão

Dão is Portugal's most underappreciated wine region — a high-altitude granite plateau in the country's centre where Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro and Jaen produce wines of remarkable elegance, freshness and ageing potential. Wines Direct sources Dão wines from quality-focused independent producers who demonstrate this understated region's genuine capacity for finesse and food-friendly character at excellent value.

Dao is one of Portugal's oldest demarcated wine regions, located in the north-central part of the country and surrounded by mountains that help moderate its climate. Dao's granite-rich soils and elevated vineyards produce red wines, predominantly from the Touriga Nacional grape alongside other native varieties such as Jaen and Alfrocheiro, that are often noted for their elegance, fine tannins and aromatic complexity, with some critics drawing comparisons to red Burgundy for their finesse rather than power. Dao reds typically show flavours of red and black fruit, floral notes and a distinctive mineral, granite-driven character, with good ageing potential in top examples. The region also produces white wines, primarily from Encruzado, which can range from fresh and citrusy to richer, barrel-aged styles with texture and ageing capacity. Dao wines pair beautifully with roast meats, game, charcuterie and traditional Portuguese cuisine. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Dao wines.
