Masson-Blondelet — Pouilly-Fumé & Sancerre

Masson-Blondelet — Pouilly-sur-Loire, Loire Valley

Masson-Blondelet is a family estate in Pouilly-sur-Loire, situated in one of the Loire Valley's most celebrated and characterful appellations. Jean-Michel Masson farms his vines with the rigour of an organic producer — without necessarily carrying the label — driven by a philosophy of minimal intervention and maximum terroir expression. The estate produces Pouilly-Fumé from the distinctive flinty soils that give the appellation its name (fumé refers to the gun-smoke aromas of the local silex), as well as a Sancerre from across the river.

Pouilly-sur-Loire is Sauvignon Blanc country: the same grape as Sancerre, the same chalk and limestone soils, but with a slightly richer, fuller expression that the flinty silex soils of Pouilly give nowhere else in the world. In the hands of a careful grower like Masson, these wines age superbly.

The Wines

Pouilly-Fumé is the estate's core wine — stony, precise, and alive with mineral energy. The Clos du Château Paladi is a single-hectare old-vine selection from the heart of the village, a more concentrated and serious expression of what Pouilly can do. The Sancerre is equally fine — bursting with vitality, with rich, focused Sauvignon Blanc character and a beautifully long finish.

Why These Wines Matter

In a world where mass-produced Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc dominates supermarket shelves, Masson-Blondelet represents something different: genuine estate wine, honestly made, with a clear sense of where it comes from. These are the wines that remind you why Pouilly-Fumé once commanded the same reverence as Chablis or Sancerre, and why they still should. Wines Direct has been committed to this estate for years as one of the finest small Loire producers available in Ireland.
