Bret Brothers — La Soufrandière, Mâconnais

Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret left the corporate wine world to farm their own vineyards biodynamically in the Mâconnais — and the wines they make are among the most compelling in southern Burgundy. Working from their domaine, La Soufrandière, they produce Chardonnays of extraordinary purity and finesse from parcels in Pouilly-Vinzelles, Pouilly-Fussé, and the broader Mâconnais.

Biodynamics underpins everything: no synthetic treatments, cover crops, compost made on-site, harvesting by hand. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous, ageing is in old barrels, and the wines are bottled with minimal sulphur and no filtration. The result is Chardonnay with remarkable texture, depth, and a clear sense of where it comes from.

The Wines

Pouilly-Vinzelles 'Les Quarts' is the estate's top cuvée — from one of the finest old-vine parcels in the appellation, it delivers mineral tension, precision, and a long, focused finish. La Carbonnode shows the brothers' experimental side: a carbonic maceration of Chardonnay that produces a wine of wonderful freshness and texture. Pouilly-Fussé Au Vignerais — from a Premier Cru parcel recognised in 2020 — is structured and age-worthy. Men in Bret is a more accessible, fruit-forward red from Gamay. Saint-Amour Climat is their newest cuvée: silky, perfumed, and beautifully expressive.

What the Critics Say

Bret Brothers wines appear on Michelin-starred wine lists across Europe — a testament to the quality recognised by those who spend their lives seeking out the finest bottles. Their Pouilly-Vinzelles and Pouilly-Fussé regularly draw comparisons with top-tier white Burgundy at a fraction of the price.

Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume are proof that passion, precision, and biodynamic farming can produce wines that compete with the finest in Burgundy. Wines Direct stocks their full range in Ireland — from the entry-level Mâcon Chardonnay to the benchmark Pouilly-Vinzelles.
