Sustainable wine refers to wines made by producers who farm and produce their wine with an eye towards environmental responsibility, social considerations, and long-term viability — going beyond just organic or biodynamic certification (though many sustainable producers are also certified organic or biodynamic).
Sustainable winemaking practices can include things like reducing water usage, protecting biodiversity in and around vineyards, minimising chemical inputs even where not strictly required for organic certification, using lighter glass bottles to reduce transport emissions, and considering the wellbeing of vineyard and winery workers. Various certification schemes exist around the world (such as Sustainable Wines South Africa, Certified California Sustainable, or similar national schemes) to help identify producers committed to these practices.
Our Sustainable Wine collection features producers who demonstrate this broader commitment to responsible winemaking. For wines specifically focused on organic or biodynamic farming, see our dedicated collections — many wines may qualify across multiple categories.
