Priorat DOCQ, Spain
Bellmunt is the name of the village in Priorat, where the grapes that make this wine are grown. This comes from younger vines and has the classic, chalk mineral character known to the region, as well as deep, red cherry fruit. Aged in large, old wood casks for 10 months before release.
Marta Rovira Carbonell abandoned a career as an aeronautical engineer in Munich to return home to Catalonia and take over the family wine business that began in 1918. Marta quickly introduced organic methods at Finca Mas D’en Gil and has moved towards biodynamic practices in the vineyard and winery. Finca Mas D’en Gil’s natural approach to winemaking was influenced by Marta’s grandmother Pilar, an expert in lunar cycles and local medicinal plants.
In her family’s high-altitude vineyards Marta produces a vibrant style of wine that stands in contrast with the heavy, over-extracted Priorat wines of her father’s time. Marta’s Bellmunt and Como Vella make better use of the altitude and terroir at Finca Mas D’en Gil, providing fresh and engaging examples of Grenache-Carignan blends.
"From the Priorat area of Spain, this has a beautiful nose of fleshy red plums and raspberries, with a floral note of peony, and has a hint of spice on the palate, making it a good wine to serve with goose or red meat."
