Tasting Note
In the glass it shows a lively medium-cherry colour with a bright ruby rim. On the nose there’s a generous red fruit spectrum – sweet cherries, raspberries, a hint of wild strawberries – layered with touches of violet, rose petal and subtle earth/forest floor.  On the palate the fruit is silky and juicy: ripe dark berries, a suggestion of dark biscuit or milk chocolate and vanilla (from maturation) appear. The acidity is fresh, minerality present, and the tannins are elegantly structured though present, giving backbone rather than pure softness. The finish lingers with fine red fruit and savoury detail. A wine that combines early appeal with serious underlying structure.

Drinking Window
Given its style and the vintage:

  • Earliest comfortable drinking: around 2024-2025 (it is already showing good charm) Goedhuis Waddesdon+1
  • Prime drinking: 2026-2034 — during these years it should balance fruit generosity and develop nuance.
  • Extended potential: possibly to 2035+, assuming perfect storage; though given it’s not the very top tier Cru in the estate’s range, cautious to assume extreme longevity.

Claude Nicolay

Claude Nicolay & her brother, François, are the current generation in a family estate that was founded in 1834. They have small plots totalling 34 acres dotted throughout some of Burgundy’s biggest names including; Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. Claude and François have not rested on the prestigiousfamily name (they are related to the Chandon family of Moët& Chandon in Champagne). Since 2001 they have been on ajourney towards fully biodynamic viticulture, a reaction towhat they felt was the destruction of vineyards in Burgundy through profuse spraying with chemical pesticides and herbicides. What you get here is not just a Chardonnay from the exalted Grand Cru slopes of Corton-Le Charlemagne, but a pure andhonest expression of time and place. Gently nurtured inseven-year-old barrels after a slow fermentation, it displays power and elegance from early on, developing richness and complexity as it matures in bottle.
