Vegan Wine — Buy Online in Ireland
Vegan wine is wine made without the use of animal-derived fining agents — the substances traditionally used to clarify and stabilise wine before bottling. While all wine is made from grapes, many conventional winemakers use animal products such as egg whites, casein (milk protein), isinglass (from fish swim bladders) or gelatin to remove haze-causing particles from the finished wine. Vegan wines use mineral or plant-based alternatives — bentonite clay, activated charcoal, plant proteins — or simply allow the wine to self-clarify without any fining. At Wines Direct, our extensive vegan wine range is one of the largest and most diverse available in Ireland, with over 240 vegan wines chosen from independent producers across Europe and beyond.
What Makes a Wine Vegan?
A wine is considered vegan when no animal-derived products have been used at any stage of production — in the vineyard, during fermentation or in the cellar fining and filtration process. The most common animal products used in conventional winemaking are egg whites (albumin), used in red wine fining; casein from milk, used for white wine clarification; isinglass from fish; and gelatin. Vegan winemakers substitute these with mineral fining agents — primarily bentonite clay — or use pea protein, potato starch or similar plant-based alternatives. Many vegan wines are also made with minimal or no fining at all, relying on settling and natural clarification. It is worth noting that vegan wines are not necessarily organic or natural, though there is significant overlap between these categories.
Our Vegan Wine Range
Our vegan wine selection spans the full range of styles — from crisp, unoaked whites and aromatic rosés to full-bodied, age-worthy reds. You will find vegan wines from every major wine region: Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Argentina, New Zealand and beyond. Many of our producers are biodynamic or organic, and the ethos of minimal intervention that characterises their viticulture extends naturally to vegan-friendly winemaking. With over 240 vegan wines available, there is no compromise between values and quality — you will find everything from everyday drinking bottles to serious cellar candidates.
Food Pairings
Vegan wines are extraordinarily versatile at the table — the full range of styles means there is always a vegan option for any dish. Crisp vegan whites are superb with vegetable dishes, fresh salads, grilled fish and seafood. Full-bodied vegan reds suit pasta, pizza, roast vegetables and meat dishes. For plant-based cooking, the freshness and vitality that characterise many vegan wines — especially natural and minimal-intervention styles — makes them particularly well matched.
