Tempranillo Wine — Buy Online in Ireland
Tempranillo is Spain's greatest red grape variety — the backbone of Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Penedés and many other Spanish appellations. One of the world's most versatile and food-friendly red wines, Tempranillo combines dark fruit, earthy complexity and a naturally food-complementing acidity that has made Spanish wine one of Ireland's most beloved choices for the dinner table. At Wines Direct, we have long championed quality Tempranillo from independent Spanish producers who express the grape's authentic character.
About Tempranillo
Tempranillo is Spain's answer to Pinot Noir — a thin-skinned, early-ripening red grape (its name derives from temprano, Spanish for early) that thrives on the high-altitude clay and limestone plateaus of central and northern Spain. In Rioja, Tempranillo is the star of Spain's most internationally famous red wines, blended with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo and aged in a combination of French and American oak. In Ribera del Duero, known locally as Tinto Fino or Tinto del País, it produces more powerful, concentrated wines at extreme altitude (800–1,000m above sea level). The variety is also planted extensively in Toro, La Mancha, Valdepeñas, Navarra and Portugal (where it's known as Tinta Roriz in the Douro and Aragonez in Alentejo). Tempranillo's adaptability to different soils and climates gives it remarkable versatility — from youthful joven wines to Reserva and Gran Reserva wines of extraordinary complexity and longevity.
Flavour Profile & Style
Tempranillo offers a distinctive profile: cherry, strawberry and plum at the fruit core, complemented by earthy, leathery notes, dried herbs (particularly thyme and tobacco), vanilla and spice from oak aging. The tannins are typically fine-grained and supple rather than aggressive, and the natural acidity gives the wines a food-friendliness that few other red varieties can match. Joven (young, unoaked) Tempranillo is vibrant and fresh; Crianza adds complexity through 12+ months of oak; Reserva and Gran Reserva develop remarkable depth and secondary complexity with age.
Food Pairings
Tempranillo is one of the world's great food wines. It shines alongside roasted Irish lamb, slow-cooked beef dishes, pork with herbs, jamón serrano and Spanish-style tapas. A glass of good Rioja with a plate of Ibérico ham and mature Manchego is one of Spain's greatest pleasures — and entirely recreatable at home. Tempranillo also pairs beautifully with mature cheddar, wild mushroom dishes and grilled meats.
