Organic wine is made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers — instead relying on natural composts, cover crops and biodiversity to maintain healthy soil and vine balance. In the winery, organic certification typically allows only a restricted list of additives, with lower permitted levels of sulphur dioxide than conventional wines. The result, at its best, is a wine that more honestly reflects its terroir — because the soil is alive and complex, and the vine is expressing that directly. At Wines Direct we believe organic farming is simply better farming. A growing proportion of our range is organic or in conversion, spanning every style from Champagne to Côtes du Rhône, from Alentejo whites to natural pétillant naturel.
