Cigales is a wine region in Castilla y Leon, central Spain, historically renowned for producing some of the country's finest rosado (rose) wines, traditionally made from Tempranillo, locally known as Tinta del Pais. Cigales rosados are typically deeper in colour and more structured than many international rose styles, with red fruit flavours, good acidity and enough body to pair with a wide range of food, reflecting the region's tradition of treating rose as a serious wine style rather than an afterthought. In recent decades, Cigales has also developed a strong reputation for red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha, often showing similar freshness and structure to the region's rose, with red fruit, herbal notes and moderate tannins. Cigales' high-altitude plateau location and continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, help preserve acidity across both styles.
