Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the flagship appellation of the Southern Rhône — a historic zone of sun-baked, galet-covered vineyards north of Avignon producing powerful, complex blends from up to 18 permitted varieties, anchored by Grenache and delivering the warmth, richness and spice that define the southern Rhône style at its finest. Wines Direct sources Châteauneuf-du-Pape from quality-focused independent producers who demonstrate the authentic character and extraordinary quality this celebrated appellation can achieve.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is one of the most celebrated appellations in the southern Rhône Valley — a wine of extraordinary depth, warmth and complexity. The appellation permits up to 18 grape varieties, though Grenache typically forms the backbone of the blend, bringing rich red fruit, spice and generosity. Mourvèdre adds structure and a gamey, earthy intensity; Syrah contributes dark fruit and pepper. Châteauneuf-du-Pape white wines — dominated by Grenache Blanc, Clairette and Roussanne — are amongst the most complex and age-worthy whites in France. The appellation's famous galets roulés — large, sun-baked stones — absorb heat during the day and radiate it back to the vines at night, producing wines of remarkable concentration. Red Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck, game and aged cheeses. At Wines Direct we work with producers who honour the tradition and terroir of this iconic southern Rhône village.
