Calatayud

Calatayud is a wine region in the Aragon area of northeast Spain, increasingly recognised for producing excellent value red wines from old-vine Garnacha grown at high altitude. Many of Calatayud's vineyards sit on steep, terraced slopes at elevations that help preserve acidity and aromatic freshness despite the region's warm, continental climate. Garnacha from Calatayud, particularly from vines that are several decades old, produces wines with concentrated red and dark fruit flavours, floral aromatics, peppery spice and a distinctive mineral character derived from the region's slate and stony soils. While Garnacha dominates, other varieties such as Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown, often in blends.
