Most people are surprised to discover that wine isn't automatically vegan — the traditional fining process that clarifies wine before bottling often uses animal-derived agents such as egg white, milk protein (casein), fish bladder (isinglass) or gelatin. Vegan wines skip these agents entirely, using alternatives like bentonite clay or simply leaving the wine to settle naturally without fining. The fining agents don't remain in the finished wine, but their use means the wine cannot be considered vegan. At Wines Direct we clearly label our vegan wines and have a growing selection across every category — sparkling, white, rosé and red.
