Sandy and Rod Hallett
Merv and Judy Lange have been two of the great pioneers of the Western Australia wine industry and over thirty years have built Alkoomi into the top quality level of wine producers. They freely admitted to knowing more about wheat and sheep than grapes in the beginning, but went on to produce an excellent vineyard and also put plenty of time into understanding wine and tasting something new each day in pursuit of extending their wine knowledge.
As their knowledge grew, so did their reputation and their wines are now demanding much attention. The Alkoomi vineyard is located only 80kms inland from the Southern Ocean, resulting in good winter rains and dry ripening months. Summer days and evenings are cooled by fresh sea breezes, enabling ideal slow ripening of grapes. This climatic pattern is very similar to that of the best Bordeaux vintages. The estate is now run by their daughter Sandy and her husband, Rod Hallett.
