Rotburger is the original name given to the Austrian red grape variety now known internationally as Zweigelt, created in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt through a crossing of Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent. The name Rotburger is still occasionally used, particularly on traditional or historic labels, to refer to this same variety. Rotburger produces medium-bodied red wines with vibrant cherry and red berry flavours, soft tannins and a juicy, approachable character that has made it Austria's most widely planted red grape. Its versatility allows it to be made in a range of styles, from light, fresh and fruity wines best enjoyed slightly chilled, to richer, oak-aged versions with greater depth and ageing potential. Rotburger pairs well with charcuterie, roast poultry, pork dishes and Central European cuisine. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Austrian Rotburger and Zweigelt wines.
