Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo — Buy Online in Ireland

Nebbiolo is one of Italy's most revered grape varieties and the force behind some of the world's greatest red wines, including Barolo and Barbaresco. Difficult to grow and unforgiving in the cellar, Nebbiolo rewards patience with wines of extraordinary complexity, longevity and character. At Wines Direct, we offer a carefully selected range of Nebbiolo wines, available with fast delivery across Ireland.

About Nebbiolo

Native to Piedmont in northwest Italy, Nebbiolo takes its name from the Italian word for fog — nebbia — a reference to the autumn mists that blanket the Langhe hills at harvest time. It is one of the earliest-budding but latest-ripening varieties in Italy, requiring the particular conditions of the Langhe hills, with their unique mix of clay-limestone soils, warm summers and cool autumns, to reach its full potential. In Barolo, it produces wines of almost incomparable power and complexity — known as the King of Italian Wines and the Wine of Kings. In Barbaresco, grown on lighter soils, Nebbiolo produces wines of greater finesse and earlier approachability. Beyond the Langhe, Nebbiolo also appears in Ghemme, Gattinara and the Valle d'Aosta, where it goes by local names such as Spanna and Picoutener.

Flavour Profile & Style

Young Nebbiolo is characterised by intense aromas of cherry, raspberry and rose petal, underlaid with earthy, tarry and sometimes truffle-like complexity. On the palate, it is high in both tannin and acidity — a combination that can make young examples austere, but which gives aged Barolo and Barbaresco their remarkable longevity. With time in the cellar, the tannins soften and the wine opens up into an extraordinary world of dried rose, leather, tobacco, anise and forest floor. The best Barolos are genuine 10–20-year wines, transforming over time from fierce to ethereally complex.

Food Pairings

Classic Piedmontese cuisine provides the perfect framework for Nebbiolo. Braised beef dishes — such as brasato al Barolo or slow-cooked beef cheeks — are the traditional match. Game, particularly wild boar and venison, also pairs beautifully, as do dishes featuring white or black truffle, mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano. For an Irish context, try it with slow-roasted Wicklow lamb with rosemary or a rich beef daube.
