Mourvedre
Mourvèdre — Buy Online in Ireland
Mourvèdre is one of the great red varieties of the Mediterranean world, producing wines of intense colour, muscular structure and captivating savoury complexity. Whether encountered as a dominant force in the blends of Bandol, a supporting player in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, or performing solo under the Spanish name Monastrell, Mourvèdre is a variety of distinctive character and considerable depth. At Wines Direct, we offer a hand-selected range of Mourvèdre wines, available with fast delivery across Ireland.
About Mourvèdre
Mourvèdre — known as Monastrell in Spain and Mataro in Australia — is believed to have originated in Valencia on the east coast of Spain before spreading across the Mediterranean. In France, it found its most celebrated expression in Bandol on the Provence coast, where the Domaine Tempier and others elevated it to international fame. It is also a key component in the great blends of the Southern Rhône, particularly Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas, where it contributes structure and spice to Grenache-based blends. In Spain, Monastrell is the dominant variety in Jumilla and Yecla, producing rich, deeply coloured wines of great intensity. Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety that needs genuine warmth to fully ripen — it thrives in the heat of the Mediterranean but struggles in cooler climates — and the wines benefit greatly from extended ageing.
Flavour Profile & Style
Mourvèdre produces deeply coloured wines with a distinctive aromatic profile: dark blackberry and cassis, meaty, gamey notes — sometimes described as wild game or leather — along with black pepper, violet, licorice and earthy, almost animal undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm tannins, good acidity and a long, savoury finish. Young examples can be quite austere and benefit from decanting; with age, the tannins soften and the wine develops extraordinary complexity.
Food Pairings
Mourvèdre's richness and meaty character calls for bold, flavourful food. Lamb is the classic match — a slow-roasted leg of Wicklow lamb, a rich tagine or lamb chops grilled over charcoal. Game birds, wild boar and venison all work beautifully. The savoury, peppery character of the wine also makes it an outstanding partner for Mediterranean cuisine: ratatouille, aubergine dishes and herb-crusted pork.
