The Hunter Valley is Australia's oldest wine region, located in New South Wales just a couple of hours from Sydney, with a winemaking history dating back to the 1820s. Despite its warm, humid climate, which might seem unsuited to fine wine production, the Hunter Valley has built an international reputation for two very distinctive styles: Semillon and Shiraz. Hunter Valley Semillon is picked early at relatively low sugar levels, producing lean, low-alcohol white wines that develop remarkable complexity with age, transforming from crisp and citrusy in youth to rich, toasty and honeyed after a decade or more in bottle. Hunter Valley Shiraz, meanwhile, tends to be medium-bodied with earthy, savoury characteristics and a distinctive leathery, 'sweaty saddle' note that sets it apart from the riper Shiraz of warmer Australian regions.
