One Grape, Two Personalities
Malbec thrives in two wildly different places, and that's what makes it so useful.
In Cahors, France, it's called Côt. The Romans planted it here 2,000 years ago. The French nicknamed it "black wine" because of its near-opaque colour and the tannin it pulls from limestone soils. This is structured Malbec. Earthy. Built to age. The kind of wine that needs a decanter and a steak.
In Argentina, it became something else entirely. French vines arrived in the 1850s. The high-altitude desert climate of Mendoza transformed the grape. At 3,000+ feet above sea level, the air is thinner. Days are hot. Nights are cold. Rain is scarce. The result? Ripe plum and blackberry fruit. Softer tannins. Velvety texture. Wines you can open tonight or cellar for years.
This dual personality means Malbec fits more occasions than almost any other red grape.
