The 2007 opens with lifted aromatics: red cherry, wild strawberry, cranberry compote, dried rose petal, sweet spice and a gentle herbal note that gives the wine real freshness. There’s also that subtle Mitjavile signature — roasted cocoa and warm tobacco — but in a lighter, more airy register.

On the palate, it’s elegant, medium-bodied, and beautifully balanced. Bright red fruit, raspberry, cherry skin, and pomegranate weave with hints of cedar, coffee bean and graphite. The tannins are fine and feathered, completely integrated now, and the acidity gives the wine a lovely sense of movement.

This is not about power — it’s about nuance. It’s the kind of vintage where the vineyard’s old vines and Mitjavile’s touch take centre stage.

The finish is long for the year, savouring out with red plum, spice and a gentle earthiness.

And yes, the critics noticed:

Robert Parker 93 Points

Robert Parker highlighted its “unexpected depth, purity and charm,” noting it as one of the rare 2007s that actually transcends the vintage.

Vinous praised its “lifted aromatics and graceful texture,” calling it a wine of “clarity and remarkable drinkability.”

This is TRB in its most delicate, expressive form — perfect for those who appreciate subtlety over theatrics.

Drink now–2029.

Francois Mitjavile

Château Le Tertre Rôteboeuf produces just over 2,000 cases a year from it's tiny 5.7-hectares, which is situated on a steep slope on the edge of a limestone plateau. The grapes are harvested by hand and are fermented in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. Le Tertre Rôteboeuf is then aged in oak barrels for 18 months. Yields are kept very low and consequently this is one of the most concentrated wines to be found in Bordeaux. One very important feature of La Tertre Rôteboeuf is that the harvest is very late, giving an almost raisin-like ripeness to the wine. This is because the soil is cold and ideally suited to Merlot. Like all the best winemakers, Francois is prepared to risk rain, and thereby the potential destruction of his crop, to achieve the result he wants. His views are summed up thus: “Let us see, what soil and weather have cooked together this year, and get the best possible out of it. The miracle comes first of all from Mother Nature”.
