Zweigelt is Austria's most widely planted red grape variety, created in 1922 by Fritz Zweigelt through a crossing of Blaufrankisch and St. Laurent. Zweigelt produces medium-bodied red wines with juicy, vibrant flavours of cherry, redcurrant and raspberry, soft tannins and refreshing acidity, making it one of Austria's most approachable and versatile red wines. Lighter styles are best enjoyed young and slightly chilled, showcasing the grape's bright, fruity character, while more serious examples, often grown on lower-yielding vines and aged in oak, can show greater depth, spice and ageing potential. Zweigelt's adaptability and food-friendly character have made it a staple of Austrian wine production, often used both as a varietal wine and in blends.
