About Roussanne
Roussanne takes its name from the russet colour its grapes develop as they ripen — rousse meaning reddish-brown in French. It is primarily grown in the Northern Rhône, where it is the sole permitted white grape in Hermitage Blanc and an authorised variety in Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. In the Southern Rhône, it appears in white Châteauneuf-du-Pape blends, where it adds fragrance and complexity. Roussanne is a challenging variety to grow — it is susceptible to powdery mildew, prone to irregular yields and requires clay-limestone soils and a continental climate with cool nights to perform at its best. This difficulty in cultivation has contributed to it being partially replaced by the easier-going Marsanne in many vineyards. However, dedicated producers who persist with Roussanne are rewarded with wines of extraordinary aromatic complexity that develop magnificently in the bottle over many years.
Flavour Profile & Style
Roussanne produces wines of medium to full body with a distinctive aromatic profile: herbs such as rosemary, thyme and sage are characteristic, alongside white peach, apricot, honeysuckle and sometimes a floral, almost jasmine-like note. On the palate, there is good natural acidity, a rich, waxy texture and a long, complex finish. With age, Roussanne develops secondary notes of toasted almonds, beeswax, dried apricot and a savoury, almost resinous complexity. Roussanne blended with Marsanne tends to be fuller and more textured; as a standalone wine it is more aromatic and refined.
