Negroamaro is one of Puglia's most important red grape varieties, with a name that translates roughly to 'bitter black', referring to its deep colour and the slightly bitter note often present on the finish. Grown predominantly in the Salento peninsula in the heel of Italy, Negroamaro produces full-bodied wines with rich dark fruit flavours of black cherry, plum and blackberry, alongside earthy, rustic and sometimes smoky notes. It is the principal grape behind Salice Salentino, one of Puglia's best-known appellations, and is also used to produce excellent rose wines thanks to its naturally deep colour and soft tannins. Negroamaro's warm, generous character reflects Puglia's hot Mediterranean climate, and its wines offer excellent value alongside more famous southern Italian reds. Negroamaro pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, tomato-based pasta and Mediterranean cuisine. Browse our Negroamaro wines online at Wines Direct, with delivery across Ireland.
