Monastrell — Buy Online in Ireland

Monastrell — the Spanish name for Mourvèdre — is one of Spain's great indigenous red grape varieties, producing wines of intense colour, bold structure and captivating savoury depth. Thriving in the hot, arid interior of southeastern Spain, Monastrell reaches its finest expression in the appellations of Jumilla, Yecla and Alicante, where old vines planted on chalk and limestone produce wines of extraordinary concentration. At Wines Direct, we offer a hand-selected range of Monastrell wines, available with fast delivery across Ireland.

About Monastrell

Monastrell is believed to be one of Spain's oldest varieties, cultivated across the Levant coast of the Mediterranean since at least the 15th century. Known as Mourvèdre in France — where it is the dominant variety in Bandol and a key component in Châteauneuf-du-Pape — Monastrell is intimately associated with the inland regions of southeastern Spain, where temperatures soar in summer and rainfall is among the lowest in Europe. This extreme climate forces the vine to work hard, producing small, concentrated grapes with thick skins and rich, dark juice. The result is wines of great depth and character. In Jumilla, the most celebrated of Monastrell's Spanish territories, old bush vines planted at altitude on chalk soils produce wines that combine power with a surprising freshness and mineral quality. The variety is also grown in France's Languedoc and Roussillon, as well as in California and Australia under the Mataro name.

Flavour Profile & Style

Monastrell produces deeply coloured wines with a rich, complex aromatic profile. Expect intense notes of blackberry, black cherry, plum and cassis, alongside earthy, almost animal qualities — leather, game, tobacco — and a characteristic peppery, spicy undertone. On the palate, it is full-bodied with firm but ripe tannins, good acidity and a long, warming finish. Young examples benefit from decanting; older, oaked versions develop remarkable complexity with notes of cedar, dark chocolate and dried fruit.

Food Pairings

Monastrell's power and savoury complexity demands bold food. Slow-roasted lamb with herbs is the classic Murcian pairing; grilled pork, spiced chorizo, venison and rabbit also work beautifully. The wine's natural warmth makes it an excellent match for dishes with smoked paprika and earthy spices. Try it also with aged Manchego or Ibérico ham as a simple but outstanding combination.
