Malagouzia

Malagouzia (mah-lah-gou-ZYA) is a very refined Greek grape variety that is increasingly attracting the attention of dedicated wine enthusiasts and sommeliers. In many ways, it signals the enormous potential of Greece to produce world-class wines from amongst its huge number of native grape varieties. Malagouzia is believed to have originated in central Greece and may be related to the Malvasia grape, although this has yet to be scientifically established.

Malagouzia is an aromatic Greek white grape variety that was nearly extinct before being revived by growers in Macedonia and other regions of Greece in recent decades. It produces full-bodied, expressive white wines with vivid aromas of peach, apricot, citrus blossom and a touch of herbal spice. Unlike many crisp, neutral Greek whites, Malagouzia is prized for its rich texture and intense aromatic profile, often drawing comparisons to Viognier. Despite its richness, Malagouzia retains good acidity, giving it balance and food-pairing versatility. Its growing popularity reflects renewed interest in indigenous Greek varieties among both producers and wine drinkers seeking something distinctive. Malagouzia pairs beautifully with richer seafood dishes, poultry in creamy sauces, and Asian-inspired cuisine with aromatic spices. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Malagouzia wines from Greece. Discover this characterful variety online, with delivery across Ireland.
