Cinsault

A heat-resiliant grape that grows in abundance in Languedoc-Roussillon. It's often blended with Grenache and Carignan to create fruit-forward lively wines. Generally plays a supporting, but fundamental role in Southern France winemaking.

Cinsault (sometimes spelled Cinsaut) is a versatile red grape variety grown widely across the south of France, particularly in Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence, as well as in South Africa, where it has a long history. Known for its light to medium body, soft tannins and juicy red fruit flavours such as strawberry, raspberry and red cherry, Cinsault is often praised for its elegance and freshness. It is a key component of many southern French blends, including Chateauneuf-du-Pape and classic GSM blends with Grenache and Syrah, and is also widely used to make rose wine thanks to its delicate colour and aromatic charm. Increasingly, single-varietal Cinsault wines, especially from old vines in South Africa and France, are gaining recognition for their light, perfumed style. Best enjoyed slightly chilled, Cinsault pairs beautifully with charcuterie, grilled chicken, salads and light Mediterranean fare.
