Abruzzo

Abruzzo is one of Italy's most exciting and underappreciated wine regions — a rugged, mountainous corner of central Italy where Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Pecorino produce wines of deep character, vivid acidity and excellent value that are making wine lovers sit up and take notice. Wines Direct imports directly from quality-focused independent Abruzzo producers who showcase the region at its best, from the coastal plains to the high-altitude Colline Teramane DOCG.

Abruzzo is a wine region on Italy's Adriatic coast, known primarily for two appellations named after its principal grape varieties: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a deeply coloured, medium to full-bodied red wine with soft tannins and generous flavours of dark cherry, plum and a hint of spice, offering excellent value and approachability that has made it one of Italy's most widely exported red wines. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, meanwhile, produces light, crisp white wines with citrus and green apple flavours, though some producers craft richer, more textured examples through extended lees contact. Abruzzo's combination of mountains and Adriatic coastline creates a varied climate well suited to both varieties, with many vineyards benefiting from cooling sea breezes. The region's wines reflect its hearty, rustic cuisine. Abruzzo wines pair well with grilled meats, tomato-based pasta, seafood and regional specialities.
