The most recognized and well-known female oenologist in Argentina, Susana Balbo has been instrumental in the transformation of quality table wines in Argentinean viticulture. She is best known for her innovation and progressive spirit in developing wines with unique character and quality, and she is the first Argentinean oenologist ever hired as a consultant by European wineries.
At Dominio Del Plata, her family's winery in the famed Mendoza wine region of Argentina, Susana crafts her own signature label wines. They embody the complexity of various grapes along with her creativity as an oenologist to produce fine wines that express prestige, power and finesse. For her Crios label, which means "offspring" (as in children), Susana selected a word to express the notion that these are wines given loving care and attention deserving of her children.
The three hands on the label, inspired by a Mayan artifact, represent Susana and her two children. By definition, Crios is to be enjoyed while still young and vibrant. Crios wines are produced under Dominio del Plata's code of sustainable agriculture.
"Susana Balbo was Argentina's first female winemaker. She has headed up the governing body of Argentine wines three times, has raised two children on her own, and survived junta and dictatorship troubles, as well as a lost husband and a business. Yet she has come back every time and, since last Christmas, has been a congresswoman in the Argentine parliment. Her signature malbec is, in a word, brilliant. It is a plum and dark chocolate-toned treat with daubs of kir, deep spice notes and a toasty vanilla undertone. Hand-harvested, aged for 13 months in expensive French oak barrells and with 35 days of maceration, this is a powerful wine with layer after layer of complex fruits and a long-evolving potential."
"This is about dark fruit complexity, lifted by spice notes of cloves and nutmeg. the tannins are stunning, fine-grained, giving a beautiful texture. A lesson in elegance."
"Winemaker Susana Balbo selects only the top barrels for her Signature series, and in this case the result is a great wine characterized by lovely fruit purity and intensity. It’s rich yet fresh, with beautiful black fruit and floral aromas. Would be perfect with steak. "
"A dense, juicy red, displaying rich plum, crushed wild berry, spice, game and light earth notes that follow through on the long, minerally finish."

Mendoza, where these vines are grown, is Argentinas foremost wine region, and it is responsible for the countrys best bottles. The province is located at around thirty degrees south of the equator. This is the northern limit of wine grape production, any closer to the equator and the grapes would shrivel in the heat. The Andes, that lie between Mendoza and Chile, raise the land to an altitude that counterbalances the equatorial heat. The result is that the vineyards of Mendoza are some of the highest in the world, between 600m and 1,100m above sea level
