Refosco is a family of red grape varieties grown across Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeast Italy and neighbouring Slovenia, with Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, named for its red stem, being the most widely planted and respected member. Refosco produces deeply coloured, high-acid red wines with firm tannins and intense flavours of dark plum, blackberry and sour cherry, often layered with peppery, herbal and slightly rustic notes. Its naturally vibrant acidity gives Refosco excellent food-pairing versatility and the structure to age well, with top examples developing additional savoury complexity over several years. Long a staple of Friulian wine culture, Refosco has gained increasing recognition as producers focus on quality winemaking to showcase the grape's robust, characterful style. Refosco pairs wonderfully with cured meats, game, hearty stews and aged cheeses. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Refosco wines from Friuli.
