Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot — Buy Online in Ireland

Petit Verdot is Bordeaux's dark, brooding blending partner — a late-ripening red variety that contributes deep colour, powerful tannins and a distinctive note of violet and dark spice to the great blends of the Médoc. Once near-extinct due to its difficult ripening requirements, Petit Verdot has found a second life as a standalone variety in warmer wine regions around the world. At Wines Direct, we offer a hand-selected range of Petit Verdot wines, available with fast delivery across Ireland.

About Petit Verdot

Petit Verdot is believed to be one of the oldest grape varieties in Bordeaux, where it has long played a supporting role in the classic left-bank blends of the Médoc alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Its name translates as small green — a reference to its tendency to remain unripe in cooler years, which historically made it an unpredictable addition to any blend. Châteaux would include it in outstanding vintages for its contribution of colour, structure and floral complexity, but omit it in lesser years. With the warming climate, Petit Verdot ripens more reliably in Bordeaux, but it has truly found its calling in warmer regions: Spain, Australia, California and Chile have all embraced it as a single-varietal wine, where the heat gives it the ripeness needed to show its best character.

Flavour Profile & Style

Petit Verdot produces wines of very deep, almost inky colour with a powerful aromatic profile. Expect intense notes of blackcurrant, plum, dark cherry and blackberry, lifted by a signature floral note of violet or lavender. The palate is full-bodied with firm, structured tannins, good acidity and a long finish with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla (from oak), mocha and hazelnut. These are bold wines that demand food and reward patience.

Food Pairings

Petit Verdot's power and structure calls for equally robust food. A thick-cut Irish Hereford ribeye steak is the classic match; slow-braised beef short ribs, venison, wild boar and rich lamb dishes also work beautifully. Aged hard cheeses — Manchego, Pecorino, aged Cheddar — are excellent partners, as are dishes with dark chocolate.
