Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is Italy's most noble and most demanding red grape — the variety responsible for Barolo and Barbaresco, two of the world's great age-worthy reds. It is a grape of contradiction: high in tannin and acidity when young, yet capable of extraordinary fragrance, finesse and silky elegance with age. The name means little fog (nebbia), referring to the autumn mists that settle on the Langhe hills as harvest approaches. Beyond the Langhe, Nebbiolo is grown in Gattinara and Ghemme on granite soils, and in the Valtellina in Lombardy where it produces wines of haunting elegance from steep Alpine terraces.
