Merlot is the world's most widely planted red grape variety and the dominant force in Bordeaux's Right Bank — the grape behind some of the world's most celebrated wines, including Petrus (100% Merlot from Pomerol) and the great wines of Saint-Emilion. At its best, Merlot produces wines of extraordinary softness, plum and dark cherry fruit, velvety texture and approachable richness. Pomerol's iron-rich clay soils produce the richest, most complex Merlot; Saint-Emilion's limestone plateau produces more structured examples.
