Primitivo

Primitivo is southern Italy's most celebrated red grape — bold, richly fruited and sumptuously textured, expressing the heat, sunshine and ancient winemaking tradition of Puglia with remarkable generosity. The same variety as Zinfandel in California, Primitivo found its spiritual home in the heel of Italy, where the intense Mediterranean climate and ancient soils produce wines of extraordinary ripeness, depth and character.

Primitivo is a red grape variety grown predominantly in Puglia in southern Italy, genetically identical to Zinfandel and originating from the same Croatian ancestor, Crljenak Kastelanski. Primitivo produces deeply coloured, full-bodied red wines with high alcohol and ripe, jammy flavours of blackberry, plum and dark cherry, often accompanied by notes of black pepper, liquorice and dried fig. Its name, derived from the Italian for 'early', refers to its tendency to ripen earlier than many other varieties, which contributes to its high sugar levels and resulting alcoholic strength. Primitivo di Manduria is the most celebrated appellation for the variety, producing rich, warming wines that reflect Puglia's hot Mediterranean climate. Primitivo's bold, generous character makes it an excellent partner for hearty, flavourful food. It pairs wonderfully with grilled and barbecued meats, rich tomato-based pasta, aged cheeses and spiced dishes. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Primitivo wines from Puglia.
