Corvinone

Not to be confused with Corvina, Corvinone is also native to Veneto and also plays a dominant role in Valpolicella winemaking. Corvinone tends to ripen later in the year making ti a favourite for Amarone & Recioto wines.

Corvinone is a red grape variety closely related to Corvina and grown predominantly in the Veneto region of northeast Italy, where it plays a supporting role in the blends behind Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella and Recioto della Valpolicella. Once thought to be a clone of Corvina, Corvinone is now recognised as a distinct variety with larger berries and looser bunches. It contributes structure, colour and tannin to blends, complementing Corvina's bright fruit and acidity. Like Corvina, Corvinone is well suited to the appassimento method of drying grapes before pressing, which is central to producing the rich, concentrated style of Amarone. Wines featuring Corvinone typically show dark cherry and plum flavours, savoury spice and firm tannins, with excellent ageing potential in the case of Amarone. These wines pair beautifully with rich, slow-cooked meat dishes, game, aged cheeses and hearty risottos. Discover Corvinone-based wines from the Veneto at Wines Direct, with delivery across Ireland.
