Chardonnay is the world's most widely planted white grape variety and one of its most versatile — capable of producing everything from the lean, mineral austerity of Chablis to the rich, buttery grandeur of a Meursault or Montrachet. Chardonnay is a naturally neutral grape that takes on the character of its terroir and its winemaker's choices more clearly than almost any other variety. Unoaked Chardonnay gives you pure fruit and freshness. Oak-fermented Chardonnay gains richness, texture, toast and complexity. The heartland of fine Chardonnay is the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy — Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet — but outstanding Chardonnay also comes from Chablis, Champagne, Alsace, Austria, Australia's Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula, New Zealand's Marlborough and Gisborne, and South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde. At Wines Direct we stock Chardonnay across the full spectrum of styles — from nervy Chablis to generous white Burgundy to vibrant New World expressions.
