Albarino Wines

Albariño is Spain's most distinctive white grape — a Galician variety from Rías Baixas, mistakenly thought for years to be a clone of German Riesling, producing delicate, lively and aromatic wines with genuine ageing potential that many consider the finest white in the country. Wines Direct curates a selection from quality-focused independent Rías Baixas producers who demonstrate why this variety has become one of Spain's most sought-after whites.

Albarino is one of Europe's most characterful and food-friendly white grape varieties — the signature grape of Galicia's Rias Baixas appellation in northwest Spain, producing wines of extraordinary aromatic freshness, citrus vitality and saline mineral character that are among the finest seafood wines in the world. Grown in the cool, wet, Atlantic-influenced climate of Galicia — quite unlike the rest of Spain — Albarino produces wines of naturally high acidity, moderate alcohol and vivid aromatics: white peach, apricot, citrus, white flowers and a distinctive saline, almost oceanic mineral quality. Across the border in Portugal's Vinho Verde region, the same grape is called Alvarinho. At Wines Direct we stock Albarino from Rias Baixas and Alvarinho from Vinho Verde.
