Of course there are a number of high quality alternatives to Champagne. Perhaps the best value comes from Spain. Wine snobs used to look down their noses at Cava but, thanks to conscientious winemakers like Carles Andreu, quality has improved dramatically with winemaking rules almost as strict as those of Champagne.
It is made in a traditional method much that described above. Carles Andreu ages his for 18 months in the bottle before releasing it, just in time for all those complex flavours to marry together nicely. It is the closest thing to Champagne that we’ve tasted and is only half the price, a point not missed by the world’s most famous wine critic, Robert Parker who, speaking of Cava from Carles’ region, said “it’s nearly as good as high-quality Champagne, but sells for a much lower price."
