Valpolicella Wine — Buy Online in Ireland

Valpolicella is one of north-east Italy's most storied and versatile wine denominations, producing everything from light, fragrant everyday reds to Amarone della Valpolicella — one of Italy's most powerful and celebrated wines. Located in the Veneto hills west of Verona, the Valpolicella zone produces wines primarily from Corvina Veronese, blended with Rondinella and Molinara, in styles that range from fresh and approachable to magnificently concentrated and age-worthy. Wines Direct sources directly from independent Valpolicella producers who craft wines with genuine terroir expression.

About Valpolicella

The Valpolicella DOC covers a broad hillside zone north-west of Verona, stretching from the shores of Lake Garda eastward. The classico zone — the original heart of the appellation — comprises five valleys: Fumane, Marano, Negrar, San Pietro in Cariano and Sant'Ambrogio. The grapes here grow in red-brown soils over limestone and basalt, producing wines of distinctive character. The region is perhaps best known for Amarone, made by air-drying (appassimento) the harvested grapes for several months before pressing, concentrating sugars and intensity dramatically. Ripasso wines, made by re-fermenting Valpolicella wine on the pressed grape skins from Amarone production, offer a middle ground — fuller body and more complexity than basic Valpolicella at more accessible prices.

Flavour Profile & Style

Classic Valpolicella is light to medium-bodied with bright cherry, sour cherry and red berry fruit, herb and spice notes, and refreshing acidity — perfect as an everyday Italian red. Valpolicella Ripasso gains greater weight, concentration and a characteristic dried-fruit richness from the Amarone pomace contact. Amarone della Valpolicella is a world unto itself: opulent, full-bodied, complex, with dark dried fruit, chocolate, leather, tobacco and spice, capable of ageing for decades.

Food Pairings

Classic Valpolicella is delightful with pizza, pasta and charcuterie. Ripasso works well with richer pasta dishes, roasted meats and aged cheeses. Amarone demands serious food — slow-braised beef, Irish lamb shoulder, game birds, or simply a fine aged parmesan. Recioto della Valpolicella, the sweet version, pairs beautifully with dark chocolate.
