95 Points | Robert Parker Wine Advocate 2024
Priorat DOCa, Spain
Clos Fontà is not just the flagship of Mas d’en Gil — it is one of Priorat’s benchmark wines. Crafted from ancient vines grown on the region’s iconic llicorella (slate) soils, this is a wine that captures the wild beauty and power of the Priorat landscape in every bottle.
The Mas d’en Gil estate, owned by the Rovira family since 1998, lies near Bellmunt del Priorat in one of the most prized corners of the appellation. Here, old bush vines of Grenache (Garnacha) and Carignan (Cariñena) cling to steep terraces carved into crumbling black slate — soils that force the roots deep, resulting in naturally low yields and extraordinary concentration. The estate is fully certified organic, with a deep respect for biodiversity and minimal intervention in both vineyard and cellar.
Winemaker Joan Rovira, part of the third generation now guiding the estate, champions an elegant, terroir-driven style of Priorat. Clos Fontà is fermented in small stainless-steel vats with indigenous yeasts, and aged in fine French oak barrels for 14–16 months. The aim is not to mask the fruit or the land, but to elevate them.
Tasting profile:
Clos Fontà 2021 is a masterclass in power and finesse. Aromas of wild blackberry, black cherry, and plum are layered with graphite, dried thyme, violets, and exotic spice. The palate is full-bodied yet remarkably poised — the old-vine Carignan lending freshness and minerality to balance the Grenache’s generous fruit. Fine tannins and vivid acidity drive a finish that lingers for minutes.
Why it matters:
Awarded 95 points by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Clos Fontà is a Priorat for the ages — a wine that speaks of its rugged landscape and the quiet dedication of its makers. Drink now with decanting, or cellar for 10–15 years to allow its full complexity to unfold.
Pair with:
Slow-cooked lamb shoulder, aged Manchego, or chargrilled beef — foods that can match its depth and stature.
