Refošk

Refošk is one of the most ancient and characterful indigenous red varieties of the Adriatic coast — grown on the Istrian Peninsula where the borders of Slovenia, Croatia and Italy meet, producing wines of deep colour, firm tannins and intensely savoury, earthy character that taste unmistakably of the land. Wines Direct sources Refošk from quality-focused independent Istrian producers who champion this genuine curiosity for the adventurous wine drinker.

Refosk, also spelled Refosco, is a red grape variety grown across the border regions of northeast Italy and Slovenia, particularly in Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Karst plateau. Refosk produces deeply coloured, high-acid red wines with firm tannins and intense flavours of dark plum, blackberry and sour cherry, often accompanied by peppery, herbal and slightly smoky notes. Its naturally high acidity gives Refosk excellent food-pairing versatility and ageing potential, with well-made examples developing additional complexity over several years in bottle. Long valued in the rustic, food-focused wine cultures of the region, Refosk has gained wider recognition as producers on both sides of the Italian-Slovenian border focus on quality and showcase the grape's distinctive, robust character. Refosk pairs wonderfully with cured meats, game, hearty stews and aged cheeses. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Refosk wines.
