Loureiro

Loureiro is nowadays sold as a single varietal, but traditionally was used in blends with other Portuguese grapes like Alvarinho. Loureiro long suffered in reputation because the wines made from it were almost invariably quite inexpensive, and what is low in cost is rarely valued much. Vinho Verde wines were dismissively referred to as “summer sippers” or “poolside wines”. Thankfully, Vinho Verdes are getting the moment and respect they deserve.

Loureiro is an aromatic white grape variety from northern Portugal, where it is one of the principal grapes used in Vinho Verde. Its name comes from the Portuguese word for laurel, a nod to the distinctive floral, laurel-leaf aromas the grape can display alongside citrus blossom and stone fruit. Loureiro produces light-bodied, fresh white wines with crisp acidity and a delicate, perfumed character, making it one of the more aromatic and elegant grapes used in Vinho Verde, often grown alongside Alvarinho and Arinto. While traditionally used in blends, single-varietal Loureiro wines have become increasingly popular, showcasing the grape's floral intensity and refreshing style. Loureiro is best enjoyed young and chilled, making it an ideal warm-weather wine. It pairs beautifully with seafood, light salads, sushi and Portuguese appetisers.
