Burgenland

Burgenland is Austria's most exciting wine region — a land of contrasts between the shallow Neusiedlersee lake and the dramatic southern hills, producing outstanding Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St Laurent and some of Europe's finest sweet wines from botrytised Welschriesling. Wines Direct imports Burgenland wines directly from quality-focused independent producers who demonstrate the extraordinary range and quality this underappreciated Austrian region can achieve.

Burgenland is Austria's easternmost wine region, bordering Hungary, and is best known for two very different but equally celebrated wine styles: bold red wines from Blaufrankisch and intensely sweet botrytis dessert wines from the area around Lake Neusiedl (Neusiedlersee). The lake's shallow waters create the humid conditions that encourage noble rot, allowing producers to make luscious sweet wines, including Trockenbeerenauslese, with concentrated flavours of honey, apricot and dried fruit balanced by vibrant acidity. On the western side of the lake, the Leithaberg and Mittelburgenland areas are renowned for structured, age-worthy Blaufrankisch with dark fruit, spice and firm tannins, alongside other red varieties such as Zweigelt and St. Laurent. Burgenland's combination of warm days, cooling lake influence and varied soils makes it one of Austria's most versatile wine regions. Burgenland wines pair well with roast meats, game and, for the sweet styles, fruit-based desserts and blue cheese. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Burgenland wines.
