Beaujolais

Beaujolais is so much more than its Nouveau reputation suggests — a region of ancient granite-rich soils producing Gamay wines of extraordinary freshness, fruit and food-friendliness, with the Crus of Moulin-à-Vent, Morgon and Fleurie capable of real complexity and ageing. Wines Direct imports directly from quality-focused independent Beaujolais producers who demonstrate what this underrated region can truly achieve when taken seriously.

Beaujolais is a wine region in eastern France, just south of Burgundy, almost entirely dedicated to the Gamay grape variety, which thrives in the region's distinctive granite and schist soils. Beaujolais produces a wide range of styles, from the famous Beaujolais Nouveau, released just weeks after harvest as a light, exuberantly fruity wine best enjoyed young, to the more serious wines of Beaujolais-Villages and the ten Beaujolais Crus, including Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin-a-Vent and Brouilly. The Crus, in particular, can produce wines of real depth, structure and ageing potential, sometimes showing similarities to lighter Burgundian Pinot Noir. Across all styles, Beaujolais wines tend to share a core of vibrant red fruit, floral aromatics and refreshing acidity, with low to moderate tannins making them versatile and food-friendly. Beaujolais pairs wonderfully with charcuterie, roast chicken, salmon and bistro classics. At Wines Direct, we offer a selection of Beaujolais wines.
